Nerves of Steel

Rear kitchen extension and ground floor remodel, at Wychwood Park, Cheshire

Back in Autumn 2018 AJC started work on Andy and Grace Marson’s home at Wychwood Park in Cheshire. The brief was to build an extension to the rear of the property to tie the existing kitchen and dining room together and then to remove all supporting walls and open up the space in its entirety to create an open plan kitchen and living space.

Andy and Grace Marson invited me over to discuss tendering for their proposed building work. We went over the drawings they had and discussed in detail what is was they were trying to achieve. They let me know that due to Grace been a teacher and Andy been a manager at Bentley Motors, the building company they decided on would have to manage the project to ensure minimum impact on their time

Andy and Grace lived at Wychwood Park in Cheshire in their 1990s five bed detached property. Downstairs the property comprised of an entrance hall, WC, living room, office, dining room and kitchen.

Our project brief was to square an area of the patio in order to create a new space where the supporting wall of the rear elevation could be removed. We would need to support the whole of the rear of the property with steels to carry the load of the first floor and open up the existing kitchen and dining room to create one open plan area, encompassing the proposed kitchen and living space. There would also be a remodel to the existing utility to the rear of the kitchen.

To achieve Andy and Grace’s vision there would need to be major structural alterations to the property. Approximately two thirds of all supporting walls to the rear of the property would need to be removed and have steel RSJs put in their place. That would mean some intricate propping work and complete trust in the AJC team.

I was quite nervous about just how many of the supporting walls were going to be removed. But Andy and his team kept us fully briefed, and talked us through the whole process, telling us what was happening whenever we asked, which gave us so much confidence

Once all of the knocking, propping and steel work was complete this created the space for the stunning kitchen and living space Andy and Grace had envisaged.

The completed Marson project was a fantastic success. AJC were able to achieve exactly what was first envisaged by Grace and Andy. They now have a home that gives them a large, open and naturally lit family kitchen and living area.

The AJC team were competent, polite and very approachable at all times. We love our home and were very keen to ensure whoever would be carrying out such extensive and major alterations were highly skilled and trusted. We are very happy with our choice in Andy and his team and would happily recommend his company for any future projects. Thanks again.
